Most retail blades sold in stores or online will remove unwanted “peach fuzz” but are not designed to provide the additional benefit of physical exfoliation. These blades contain safety guards to prevent injury while in use, therefore only providing hair removal and not providing you the additional benefits of exfoliation.
Dermaplaning is a physical/mechanical exfoliation that is extremely safe when performed by a professionally trained skin care specialist utilizing the appropriate tools and practices for the service. Low quality tools, including blades not designed for dermaplaning and inexpensive handles that don’t lock the blade on tight, are responsible for increased risk of injury to the client, which can cause scarring. Utilizing proper technique including number of passes, the correct angle and pressure is vital to assure client safety and best outcomes, if there is a lack of education, injuries are very common.

The ideal client is one focused on anti-aging or looking for a smooth and flawless canvas for makeup application. This client is concerned about dull, dry skin, a sallow complexion, enlarged pores, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and perhaps acne scars. Contraindications to this treatment, including but not limited to uncontrolled diabetes, active cancer, active high grade acne, active coldsore, bleeding disorders and the inability for blood to coagulate following injury. Certain medications including blood thinners, higher dosages of Aspirin, and Accutane (if taken within 1 year of service) are contraindicated for this treatment due to increased sensitivity and/or the possibility of delayed clotting from a nick or cut.
