IPL Therapy

IPL, otherwise known as intense pulsed light, is a type of light therapy best used for treating a wide variety of skin concerns. IPL can be used to get rid of freckles, sun damage and age spots and works to provide evenness to one’s overall skin tone. IPL is also one of the better treatment options for rosacea by reducing broken capillaries throughout the face. Would you believe us if we told you that IPL can also be used as a form of hair removal? Although it’s not the preferred choice of treatment for this procedure, it can and does remove hair. Needless to say, due to its multitude of benefits, IPL is definitely at the top of our list!

Here at Skin Studio, we use an IPL device called Lumecca by Inmode. It is a non-invasive, relatively quick procedure that is used on the face and other body parts to provide a younger-looking appearance! Want to learn more? Keep reading!

What to expect during the procedure

The skincare professionals performing the procedure first start by cleaning the area that is to be treated followed by applying protective eye wear to themselves and their clients, Shortly thereafter, a thin layer of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin, and the treatment begins. Light pulses are applied to the skin with the help of the IPL tool. This relatively comfortable procedure is tolerated well by many, with occasional clients describing it as an elastic band is snapping against their skin.

Based on what area of the body is being treated and how large the area is, the therapy session should take 20-30 minutes. You may need multiple therapy sessions to get the results you would most desire. At Skin Studio, results are usually seen between 1-3 sessions. Keep in mind that each treatment is spaced out about 1 month apart to allow the skin to heal in between.

How well IPL therapy works?

Newer IPL tools work about as well as laser treatments when it comes to certain cosmetic procedures, providing less risk and little to no downtime. However, when it comes to hair removal, IPL therapy can vary depending on your skin tone and hair colour. Unfortunately, IPL therapy is not recommended for individuals with darker skin tones.

How long do IPL results last?

IPL results are often noticeable a couple of weeks after the first treatment. The results of IPL therapy can usually be enjoyed for years if patients take good care of their skin and keep it protected from the sun. An IPL treatment every six to twelve months as part of your skincare routine can also boost collagen production, which is one more anti-ageing agent for both men and women!

Tips for after the IPL therapy

  • Use a gentle cleanser with warm water at least two times a day
  • Avoid hot tubs, hot showers, or hot baths for the first two days – warm showers are fine
  • Keep away from exhausting exercise for the first two days since overheating the skin can affect the results
  • Stay away from wearing makeup for at least 12 to 24 hours after treatment
  • Do not scratch or pick at the skin, this will increase chances of scarring and pigment changes – spots that surface will naturally flake away
  • Keep the skin moisturized at all times
  • Avoid the sun and wear sunscreen every day with at least 30 SPF
