Here at Skin Studio, we’re all for chemical peels. Our only qualm? We despise ‘at home’ chemical peels. We know you’ve seen them on commercials, Instagram accounts and even in the skincare section of your local beauty store, all promising you that they’re safe to do at homeand will save you money in the long run. Well, that’s most definitely false.
Believe it or not, chemical peels can be dangerous if they aren’t done correctly. This is why it’s always best to get them done professionally; by doing them at home, you could injure yourself or permanently scar and damage your skin. As everyone’s skin type is different, different reactions can occur with the chemical peels that might be difficult to treat from home. Medical-grade chemical peels done by skin specialists are the safest, most effective way to achieve fresh-looking skin.
In order to properly perform a chemical peel, all steps need to be taken, hence why it’s important to have a skin consultation before putting any unknown products on your face. Estheticians and medical professionals are important in this process because they’re able to recommend the type of chemical peel (different types of peels soak into the skin differently, depending on the chemicals used) as well as how frequently the procedure needs to be performed in order to see results.
Apart from the fact that they could potentially damage your skin permanently, we haven’t really explained why ‘at-home’ chemical peels are worse than the ones performed by experts. Well, simply put, many of the chemical peels you can order online have far too much of certain acids in them, so much so that some of them aren’t even legal in Canada (If you’ve ever heard of The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, that’s one of them) As much as these peels claim to work, they actually are said to do more harm than good. For example, the amount of AHA put into this peel is far too much; when combined with BHA (Otherwise known as salicylic acid) it can actually irritate the skin rather than help it. The more acid that hits the skin, the more tissue that will be destroyed and we can’t promise that the damage won’t be severe, or even worse, permanent. This isn’t the only peel like it, either — the majority, if not all of the chemical peels you can purchase online have a similar issue with one of the acids the product includes. By going to a trained professional, you can be assured that medical-grade chemical peels are
being used, which is a better alternative than a cheap, imported chemical solution.
Hearing all this seems like enough reason to save it for the experts, right? So there you have it; apart from the cheap price point, nothing good ever comes out of ‘at home’ chemical peels. In
fact, the money you save purchasing the product means nothing if you have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to correct the damage afterwards. It’s just not worth the risk, we can
assure you of that.
